Welcome to Batchwood Hall Bowling Club
Batchwood Hall Bowls Club is a hidden gem, found in the peaceful surroundings of Batchwood Sports and Golf Centre, off Batchwood Drive. We have a spacious, modern club house and a quality green, excellently cared for by the team that looks after the surrounding golf course. There is plentiful free parking.
We are a mixed club with a famously friendly and welcoming reputation. The outdoor bowling season runs from mid-April to the end of September. This year our green will be open for play on 15th April, when the club welcomes our Patron, the Mayor of St Albans, who will cast the first bowl after a buffet lunch.
Bowls is a simple sport, easy to learn, suited to all age groups, genders and abilities. It is extremely sociable and a most enjoyable form of exercise. Bowls is an activity in which men and women can play together on an equal footing. It is also relatively inexpensive, especially at Batchwood where, after paying your reasonably priced subscription, all the organised games are free, as well as the casual ‘roll-ups’. The club has qualified coaches to assist those new to bowls and existing members. A social ‘club night’ roll-up takes place on Monday evenings with a supper at small cost and during the winter months various social events take place in the club house.
If you would like to give bowls a try, the club is holding open afternoons from 2pm on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April. Bowls will be provided and all you need is flat soled shoes / trainers. Our members will be very happy to introduce you to this wonderful sport.
Our programme of matches for 2023 can be viewed under the Fixtures tab. The ‘bread and butter’ of bowling are the weekend and midweek friendly matches against other locally situated Hertfordshire clubs. These are mostly mixed team games, with a smaller number for ladies or men only. They are all very sociable occasions with light refreshments and chatter afterwards, or midway. Batchwood Bowls Club has an excellent kitchen and a bar, serviced by the members.
Bowls can also be a competitive sport and the club enters team leagues at County and District level, with some success last year. Many individual members enter the ‘in house’ club competitions and those organised by Herts Bowls, the St Albans & District Bowling Associations and the Watford Veterans.
For enquiries or more information, please go to the Contact tab and phone, or message. Join us on the afternoon of 22nd or 23rd April, or both, to have a go. Equipment, tuition, encouragement and refreshments are all provided. All we need is you!
