Welcome to Batchwood Hall Bowling Club

Batchwood Hall Bowls Club is a hidden gem, found in the peaceful surroundings of Batchwood Sports and Golf Centre, off Batchwood Drive.  We have a spacious, modern club house and a quality green, excellently cared for by the team that looks after the surrounding golf course.  There is plentiful free parking. We are a mixed club with a famously friendly and welcoming reputation.

Bowls is a simple sport, easy to learn, suited to all age groups, genders and abilities.  It is an extremely sociable and enjoyable form of gentle exercise and in bowls men and women can play together on an equal footing.  It is also relatively inexpensive, especially at Batchwood where, after paying the reasonably priced subscription, all the organised games are free, as well as the casual ‘roll-ups’.  A social ‘club night’ roll-up takes place on Monday evenings with an optional supper at small cost and during the winter months various social events take place in the club house.

The outdoor bowling season runs from mid-April to the end of September.  This year our green opened for play on 13th April, when the club welcomed our Patron, the Mayor of St Albans, who cast the first bowl after a buffet lunch with the members.  Our programme of matches for 2024 can be viewed under the Fixtures tab.  The ‘bread and butter’ of bowling are the weekend and midweek friendly matches against other locally situated Hertfordshire clubs, played either 'home' or 'away'. These are mostly mixed team games, with a smaller number for ladies or men only. They are all very sociable occasions with light refreshments and chatter afterwards.  Batchwood Bowls Club has an excellent kitchen and a bar, serviced by the members.

Bowls can also be a competitive sport and the club enters team leagues at County and District level, with some success last year.  Many individual members enter competitions at a choice of levels.  These are ‘in house’ club competitions and inter club competitions organised by Bowls England, Herts Bowls, the St Albans & District Bowling Associations and the Watford Veterans Association.

The club has two qualified coaches and 4 Open Afternoons have been held in April and May, when the public could meet the coaches and members and try the sport.  A  free short coaching course is then provided for potential new members and first year subscriptions are reduced.  But if you have missed these, don't worry, contact us and our coaches will be happy to meet you and arrange a taster session for you.
