Batchwood Hall Bowlng Club opened the 2026 season on Saturday 11th April when the club welcomed their Patron, the Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Teresa Heritage, to cast the first bowl.

Representing Harpenden South ward since 2002, the Mayor’s civic year focuses on volunteering and supporting small businesses. The Mayor’s charities are Community First Responders and Pancreatic Cancer UK. Batchwood bowls club made a donation to the Mayor’s charities.

In her speech to club members the Mayor mentioned her theme for the year was volunteering and said ‘where would we be without volunteers’. She acknowledged the work that had gone into the organising of the day (volunteers) and went on to thank George Tutt & Sue Swain the Captains for 2026 and wished everybody a good year. The Mayor then delivered the first bowl of the season and returned to the clubhouse for a cream tea joined by all the members.

Open Days have been arranged later this month to give people a chance to ‘try their hand’ at bowls. On Saturday 25th April & Sunday 26th April between 12 noon and 5.00p.m the club is inviting members of the public to come along. All equipment will be provided just wear flat soled shoes (e.g. trainers). Everyone is welcome.

Bowls is a simple sport, easy to learn, suited to all age groups, genders and abilities. It is a sociable and enjoyable form of gentle exercise in which men and women can play together on an equal footing. Qualified coaches and members will be on hand to give guidance.
