Batchwood Hall Bowling Club - Press Report - 22nd September 2025
The highlight of this week was the President's Day. Ian Connaughton, President of Batchwood Bowling Club, held his President's Day at the weekend to raise funds for the RNIB. He chose this charity as many years ago his best friend lost his sight at the age of 23 years. They have remained close friends ever since.
This event was held for all members, their family and friends. It was a 'fun' day with a spider, bowls game, table tennis, quoits etc being played. The spider started the proceedings. This entails a very large model spider placed in the centre of the green. All participants stand at the edge of the green with one foot in the ditch. ALL players, on the ringing of a bell, deliver their bowl simultaneously to get as near to the spider as they can. It is chaos! Bowls go in all directions crashing into each other; the eventual winner is the owner of the bowl nearest to the spider. The winner was Liz Schlatter a long-time member of Batchwood BC.
The purpose of the day was to raise funds for the RNIB. The sum of £450 was raised from the proceeds of the spider and raffle. This will be added to the monies that Ian has collected during the season. The raffle prizes were donated by attendees. The President treated all present to a magnificent tea. The winning team were Liz Walls, Ian Teo, Joyce & John Hopkinson.
The ladies played a match against Hemel Hempstead. Although they lost the match, they had a good top rink winning 20 / 10. Players were Jackie Kenealy, Brenda Bennett, Ian Connaughton & Sue Swain.
